St. Lawrence University students can study in China for either fall or spring semester through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) program in Shanghai. This is an island program for American students from diverse colleges and universities. There is no language prerequisite. The program is especially appropriate for students interested in international relations, international economy, Chinese culture, China and the global economy, and, broadly, Asian studies.
The curriculum is organized around four courses, which include a required language study (at beginning through advanced intermediate levels), and three electives taught in English by Chinese professors. There are many electives offered for students to choose from–for current electives, refer to the CIEE website.
Shanghai — China’s largest city — is a dynamic city, revealing the forces of economic globalization. It is at the leading edge of economic and cultural change in China and, therefore, is the perfect locale from which to observe the interplay of various forces from within China and from the international community. The modernization and economic development which China has been experiencing can easily be witnessed in this vibrant and cosmopolitan city although those in search of old Shanghai can still find remnants of its magnificent past.
